"Why do the Canadians etc. kill so many seal every year and for what purpose?"

"As many as 3,000 seals are being killed - legally - by salmon farmers in Britain every year according to wildlife campaign groups. same is the case with Canada also.
Farmers' groups say the seals are a huge threat to farmed salmon because they can bite through any net.
This is nothing but human greed at it's worst."

"I agree; it's completely barbaric. I don't even see a way it can be justified!"

"The answer is to supply the Europeans fashion needs. This is a long time first nations traditional trading biz (fur trading) nd livelihood (500 years). We in Canada do not wear fur and it is frowned upon by its citizens. These activities are shrinking but are way up North far, far away from the population of Canada. It is like another world, the ICE world.
Most Canadians are outraged that this is still happening in our North country. I agree with you...this is UNACCEPTABLE. We do not condone this and have vigously opposed these actions. This is why the North has to be included more into the Canadian Dream. It will happen as the climate changes and alters this ecosystem. Our Northen people will have to transform from the old age to a new and hopefully better life.
This is an example of consumers not caring where they get their goods. Stop buying and it will end. Power of the People..."

I have to agree with you canadianleon. And I do understand that this slaughtering is happening in the north and that the majority of Canadians do not condone such behavior. What is the Canadian Dream?
I'm not sure however that we can wait for the climate change to alter the ecosystem. This is happening now and we must bring about as much awareness as we can to stop this barbaric display as soon as possible. Awareness is what we need, to as many people as we can reach around the globe. This is not just Canada's problem, it's all of our problem."

"The Canadian Dream is founded in being a nation that is truly a "Global Village". The meaning of Canada means "Village". We wish our nation to be an archtype of how all cultures can contribute and interact as truly global citizens. I see this happening by embracing the grand idea of living... as our first nations did for thousands of years... in harmony with nature...this will be a Sustainable-Life. We are very much conscious of our impact on nature and are transforming towards this ideal.
Again, our people of the North need new ways to earn a living."

"I think the Canadian Dream is a wonderful dream. I think every nation should adopt a similar one. Now I'm not sure if this is correct, but I thought the seal slaughter was because of the fur trade and because the fishermen say the eat too many fish and so they can't make a living fishing, so turn to the slaughter and back to the fur trade.
I understand that these people need to find a new source of income, however these people have been born into this vocation and have no other marketable skills. Most of them probably don't even have a high school diploma. These are people who don't know any other way of life and truly believe they are only protecting the way they make a living and take care of their families.
I do think that if the demand for the fur were to be stopped, that might help to curb the slaughter a bit, but that would still leave the problem of the lessening fish population. I wonder how far off shore they would have to go so they would be able to make a profitable living? I mean the seals can't be everywhere?
And Canada is not the only place guilty of these practices. I look forward to any more comments of info on this subject."

"I don't mean to be funny but as I understand it they eat the meat, use the fur much like we use shoe leather collected from dead cow carcases. As far as I can understand its the same thing as deer, and not all far from eating and wearing cows. Lets not get emotional about it, your either vegan or a seal or calf murderer of one sort or another. (yes I do eat meat, I don't generally kill my dinner, but I understand where it came from)"
