"I would like to do something for Help for Heroes.
Why? Because no matter what you think of the wars that are going on, it is the guys and girls on the ground who take the casulties."

"Charities contribute to "managed inequality." Often what is given in charity has strings attached. Many people have been deeply concerned about the recent expulsion of many charitable organizations from the Congo, but are unaware that those charities have ties to governments and organizations that recruit, fund, arm, and train the warlords who are responsible for the problems. I give directly to those in need, like homeless people in my community, and also to groups I can prove have no ties to genocide, such as Friends of the Congo."

"I donate monthly to 'Doctors without Borders'. I have met people who have been involved and they have been inspirational."

"I also like to help a group of disadvantaged persons directly by providing them lunch once in two months. Charity ? i am not too sure if the full money is used or bulk is spent on administrative costs."

"Shamefully charity begins at home for me...
I'm a member of Sustrans, the charity for sustainable transport (that look after and create the national cycle routes) and LCC, the london cycling campaign... i'm also a member of the london wildlife trust and RSPB...
Recently I've been having a clear out at home and giving away the proceeds using a thing called 'missionfish'... i'm sure both ebay and missionfish take their cut, but so far I've scraped together a paltry £50."

"I presently work for a children's charity, mainly dealing with education. I also volunteer for the London Wildlife trust and support charity shops whenever I can. Coming from South Africa, I have a mixed view on charities. I have too seen many that just give, but do not teach, so when the funds run out the people are back in the position they were originally in. Unable to fend for themselves. What is essential for all charities is some level of social engagement and education with the recipients for that charity to have any long-lasting sustainable effect."

"Hey Amy,
Good to see another member of the wildlife trust on here!
Thinking about this thread... the site template could use a mod to replace one of 'favourite movie/book/celeb' with favourite charities... seems more relevant to me - given the context of the site."

"@Michael and Amy, the celeb was meant to be for green celeb but we agree with you and we will change the green celeb for charity. please bear with us for the change as it needs to take its place in the queue. We value your comment. Thank you"
