"Could you? would you? should you? Be unplugged or at least try to be for a stretch. . . Unplugged as is in No Ipod, Laptop, TV, Mobile/Cell phone etc. Yes, give up all your gadgets to reduce carbon foot print, get better quality of life, slow the pace of life, do other activities that require mobility and effort?
What say ye?"

"Sounds interesting. However there are some issues.
I go climbing and bike riding, both of which I take a mobile for. If I get injured out the arse end of nowhere what would I do?
The rest of the stuff I would be happy to give up for a while"

"I guess in a situation like that you would bring the mobile phone and spare battery but only turn it on in case of emergency. I can sacrifice most things but the idea of living without my iPod fills me with dread. How will I get anything done?"

"I dont think I could do it for more than a day. I love my iPod and my TV too much. That sounds shallow but I'm just being honest"

"My last post seemed to fail?! Maybe two will appear later...
...I'll make this one shorter! ;)
I think technology gets a raw deal sometimes - as I have mentioned elsewhere on this site I believe information and communication are really quite useful for ecologists. From educating armchair environmentalists like me to monitoring collapsing ice shelves (see ESA website)
So, no, I don't think I should switch off!
I worry more about the life cycle of some of these gadgets than I do about their use..."

"I agree with Michael in that I tend to worry more about the life-span of gadgets. It is one of the major things that annoys me in this day and age. I do not want to have spend money on gadgets that seem to have a built in self-destruct mechanism that activates 2 days after the warranty runs out. Can companies not think of other ways to match their profit margins that are not so environmentally harmful. Mobile companies, for example. Why don't they sell new covers / upgrade the circuits / give it an over-all every two years instead of replacing your phone? Why do we not demand more sustainable products? Why do we allow producers to get away with such low standards? Does anyone know of a movement or some way we can lobby against this rampant consumerism?"

"OK, so the above was a bit of a rant and I did not really answer the question. I can go, and do go, months without anything electrical when I am in the outdoors, the problem is that it is incredibly hard to do this within a city. I think this stems from the instant-access culture that is expected and ingrained in city dwellers. How many times have you left your mobile at home and felt slight panic throughout the day that someone might not be able to get hold of you? We forget that not so long ago mobiles did not even exist and we survived then. All it takes is just a change in your way of thinking. I would suggest that even if you don't think you can go unplugged, why not challenge yourself and try? You may be able to manage better than you think."

"Yep, lets all go unplugged for a day, like it or not and then we can compare how it went and who fell by the wayside.
When shall we do it people? A weekend would seem the most sensible time as for those of us who live and die by PC would be sitting at work doing nothing and having the boss go purple with rage lol"

"Well, we don't all work a 9 -5!
That said, I will have just finished working stupid hours in Epsom next Sunday so work will have a cheek to email me."
