"Studies predict major extinctions and collapse of Greenland ice sheet with temperatures rising well above UN targets. Are we too late in trying to tackle climate change?"

"It might be too late to save the planet as we knew/ know it, but should NEVER mean we stop trying... say you're on a ship in the middle of the ocean and the ship is catching water... do you just give up and wait to drown? NO, we try! I believe we have a stewardship duty and like any job, even if the work is not going to plan, you keep trying as you do not want to be sacked, disappoint, let down etc. My 2p. In peace, Rianne"

"I totally agree with GreenCreation. If you think that it is too late, then why not jump off a bridge. The human race has shown time and time again that it has the potential and genius to find solutions to major problems. So Eleanora, dont give up as yet and trust in the human intelligence"

"To some extent yes. We are already locked into 40 years of climate change buy the current levels of atmospheric CO2 and other GHGs. We will have to adapt to this, however what we do now could limit the extent to which the effects go.

It also looks as if we are about to pass atleast 2 critical tipping points.

After 10 years of no growth in global methane levels ( a GHG 25X more potent than CO2) the last 2 years have now shown a sharp upturn in methane emissions. NOAA state that this is because the permafrost is melting.

Over the last 3 years artic ice volumes as measured and modeled by NSIDC have fallen through the floor. less ice less reflected heat. Another tipping point. http://nsidc.org/images/arcticseaicenews/20100608_Figure5.png

This is all bad and we are in for a rough ride but despite this there is always hope that we can weather the storm and survive. combatting climate change and fossil fuel depedence will help us build a resilient society able to persist in what ever way is needed even the chage and transitions are painful.

things are always worse in anticipation!"

"http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/iadv/ for methane emission select CH4.

Also concerning is the fact that atmospheric CO2 levels rose by the second highest rate ever May 09-May10, i guess that means tbe recession is over them.

I suspect that the only way we will be able to halt the global rise in CO2 levels fast enough is through a massive and permanent global recession. The USSR managed a 5% annual fall in co2 emissions with the fall of the soviet union.....maybe our best hope is a few more jerome kerviels, rogue traders wasting money in the global markets, and an oil price over $150 rather than an army of new green consumers buying more green products."

"Jerome, I have to agree with your last paragraph in the next to your last post. And I don't see where the statement of a global recession is that far off base. We have already seen the global markets falling and none of this is good except for the reasons you've already stated as far as the global outlook is concerned. I mean I hate likehell seeing the market on a daily roller- coaster ride like it has been for the past few years, only because it means our retirement fund will probably be completely depleted by the time we get to retire. The only thing that might save us is that here in the US, at age 591/2, you can take your money out of a 401k without paying a penalty and put it into say an IRA or some other, hopefully money-making entity.

But I still think you are spot on about there needing to be a global market meltdown bringing better, more long lasting results in the long run.

Thanks for always giving me a different perspective on things."

"Guys, lovely thread. Candeeb and Jerome, you give me an insight into this which I wouldnt have had otherwise so thanks. About a permanent global recession, how achievable is that? The city is back on big bonuses so am not sure if this will ever happen"

"Yes it is simply too late and nothing we do now, will reverse the situation. call me whatever you like but I think social chaos and diseases triggered by a warming planet is at our doorstep (if not this generation, the next)"

"@Ralph, how can you be so pessimistic? Of course we´re going to come up with a solution. I hope you dont deal with every challenges in your life in the same way..."

"You go Anita. If you hadn't said it, I would have. That's exactly the attitude that keeps us from all joining together and getting things handled. Pessimism and giving up surely isn't going to get the changes we need accomplished. People, you are not alone. You are not just one person trying to make changes for the better, and even if you were, we have to start someplace. It only takes one person to pass on a good deed for the next person to feel good about it and continue to pay it forward."

"Hi guys, is there anything more concrete we could do as a group? I am open to any ideas."

"Hello I am new here, it all sounds like doom and gloom but the answer is quite simple, do what you can. I agree we need an economy with sustained shrinkage not growth but how is any government going to sell that to its voters?
Just do what you can, sell the car, get a bike, turn down the heating, buy local food etc etc, it is simple because all we need to do is live simpler.
Our whole house runs on the same amount of electricity used by 2 x 100 watt light bulbs.
It can be done, one just needs to think green and act green, to be honest its a much happier way to live.
Just look at your bills, start there, if you can cut a bill you will most likley have reduced your consumption and carbon footprint.
If we change, the earth will take care of itself.
I hope !!!"

"Eleanora, Green Creation, Marie, Jerome, Distant Wind, Sam, Ralph, Anita, Franand Steve, I think each and everyone of you has brought up very valid thoughts on this topic. However, Steve, you said something today that just really made so much sense and how the solution is such an easy one. Fran, you also said pretty much the same thing by also questioning what more we can do as a group to make things better. And Ralph, you're just doom and gloom and can't seem to find the forest for the trees, but if you all read what Steve wrote, you'll see how right he is and how it can never be too late for any conceived change to take place as long as there is at least one person who is thinking of the problem and how to resolve it. It only becomes too late when no one thinks of the problem any longer, because without thinking about the problem, there would be no reason to conceive of the need for a solution. It only becomes too late when the problem is no longer thought about and goes by the wayside."
