"According to an article I read on the guardian today, China is waking up to greener values and is seeking to lead the world on sustainability. Imagine what could happen if 1 billion Chinese start consuming green?"

"Anita,
This doesn't surprise me in the least. China has always been ahead of us in technology and not afraid to let the world know it. Their children rank much higher in learning then ours do and its such a shame that here in the US we cant even seem to give our children the knowledge and technology they so deserve. The US is too concerned with scholastic testing scores to actually teach our kids the things that we as children were taught. My grandsons, one in the 8th grade and the other in the third are only taught the questions that will be on the testing and all of the other necessary skills are thrown out the window. For example, last year my oldest grandson was in a geography class and the whole year was dedicated to the countries of Canada and Russia. My daughter just told me that he is in a world history class that is basically only designed to teach him the history of what happened during WWll. What can we expect from our children when they graduate with so little preparation from the school systems here? The purpose of all the scholastic testing in grades 3, 8, and 12 are designed to suggest what the teachers and schools should receive from the Govt. for funding and also as a measure of whether or not the child should graduate if he doesn't pass the 12th grade testing.

I'm sure that is not the way that China's school system works. The children there are far ahead of the US in their teaching of the sciences and math as well. This only leads me to believe that China is very well on the way to becoming first in greener sustainability. Somebody has to take the first step and it really doesn't matter who it is as long as it is someone. Maybe if a billion Chinese start taking the lead, the rest of the world will follow or at least wake up and smell the fried rice!

I will have to look into this further here in the US to see if anything is being said about this matter here or if like so many other things, it is being kept secret."

"@Candeeb, let us know if you find further info from the US schooling system and sustainability. i would be interested to know as well as others in this community will. There is a need for much more resources to be deployed to our education system. After all, future generations will be the ones having to deal with the catastrophic impacts of CC. Although I agree with both of you, China is definitely taking the lead in the green industry, China is also going to become the main polluter in the world. They are building 1 mone coal a day and surely this is not in line with their role as a world green leader."

"No I dont think so. China is opening huge coal mines all over the country. Their hunger for fossil fuel is unbelievable. How can we say that China is a leading country on sustainability?"

"While I agree that China is soon going to be the largest polluter in the world due to Thierry continued dependence on fossil fuels, I believe that the major reason the US is not leading the world in sustainability is becaus we keep out-sourcing all of our technology and investments to other countries and China. Nothing here stays in- house. That is another reason why we can't get our economy going again, because all the work is being out-sourced as well. Jobs that could be done here at home are being sent overseas because it's cheaper labor.

For example, the condominium I live in is trying to upgrade not only all our roofs, elevators, and parking area lights. We
have contracted local companies to do this work. While trying
to bring the parking area lights up to code and figure out a
way to save on electricity, we started researching solar panels
to replace the original lighting. We looked into American
companies and found out that they really aren't American at
all, they are just the imports from another country which was outsourced by the US and therefore explains why the prices are so outrageous. We then started looking into the actual companies where the solar panels are manufactured and found we could get all of the panels and poles if we go straight to
the source, in Mexico. So, this is what we will do because
here in the US you can't seem to really buy American and if
you can, the prices are so outrageous, you are forced to go to
a foreign country, where I might add, is where you would get
the same materials for triple or less the cost of buying in the US.
It is my opinion that the Us does everything possible to keep you from buying American by keeping the cost so high you are forced to buy foreign, even though the original product might
be American.
We will arrange to fly to Mexico, go directly to the manufacturer with a rental truck, pick up all the materials needed and drive them back to the US at less then half the cost of buying from US."

"It may, in india we all are planting more and more for green specialy in rajasthan"

"Hi Jeetu, you touched on India and it´s nice to hear that you are planting more and more trees especially in the state of Rajastan. But unfortunately I dont think India has yet green credentials as a country. India´s greenhouse gas has risen by 58% bettwen 1999 and 2007. The country now ranks fifth globally in total GHG emissions, behind the United States, China, the European Union and Russia in 2007. But I am very encouraged by what you are saying and hopefully more Indian people will put pressure on the government."

"Could it be that the UK will actually be the leader in Sustainability?? I just read an article that I picked up on from another web site I visit and there was a very interesting article about the UK having a breakthrough in synthetic gasoline for automobiles. I can give you the link: www.gizmag.com/break. Looks like you may have to copy and paste in your browser. Also you may see that it says you have gone to the wrong page but just look up at the top of the page under the word in red Gizmag and you will find the article. But go to this link and read the article, when you open the page just under the word Gizmag, you will find something that reads " Breakthrough promises $1.50 per gallon synthetic gasoline with no carbon emissions" and click on it to reach the article.

I'm sorry for posting this here if it is in the wrong place, I haven't been on the site in a long time and so much has changed that I will have to relearn my way around again. LOL If this is in the wrong place or you feel it should be moved, please do so as I really believe that this is a very hopeful solution and that being said, they also have any number of other articles that may prove to be interesting as well.

Hope everyone has been doing well and I have missed all of you very much. I hope to become more active very soon."

"I wish I was as optimistic as you Candeeb. i dont believe the UK is a leader in sustainability. You should see all the cuts the government is making here. yes CO2 level has decreased but this is just a direct result of the recession i.e. people dont have enough money to travel, buy stuff ...but their mentality hasnt changed. Candeed, you are the ternal optimist and we need more people like you!"

"Thank you Sam. I guess I am an optimist, but I choose to be because its better then the alternative of always being worried and depressed over things I have no control over. So, if being optimistic in the middle of all the chaos, then that is indeed what I choose.

I know that you are right about a lot of people not changing their mentality of doom thinking, but they have every right to keep thinking that way, when so much of the media feeds us everything we need not to be optimistic about anything. The Federal Government as well as the State and Cointy governments are also making extreme cuts to everything and then some. If only a very smLl fraction of any of the proposed cuts go through, the end result will be catastrophic. I would like to believe the the American people are tired of being lied to, tired of having campaign promisses broken, and ready and willing to stand up and peacefully demonstrate for what they
really want. I think it's time to remember the sixties and the passion and determination that people of that generation were willing to stand up and fight for until their voices were heard. You don't see demonstrations today, you don't see the passion and determination for committed change. All you see today is people who believe their voice doesn't count, their vote doesn't count. They have no drive, no motivation, to gather others of like mind together and stand together and demonstrTe and protest everything that is wrong with the system. That all being said, I am still optimistic that there are others out there like me that will find each other and we will prevail in standing up for what's right and get people motivated until we have a large movement the liked of which hasn't been seen since the sixties.

Yes, I am the Eternal Optimist and there's nothing wrong with that. Come on and get on my bandwagon and let's creAte some change for the better. All who wMt to create change and make your voices heard are welcome."
