"My 6 year old egg attends an eco-school and they have just called me to ask to do a 20min session on any green issue with 250+ primary school kids during assembly in 3 weeks time.

All suggestions greatly appreciated. Please do not hold back or be shy. Post here or email me robin@mygreencleaner.co.uk or send me a private message via my profile page.

Thank you :)"

"MGC,

How about some of the basics like why using energy saving light bulbs is a good idea?
A very simple way of putting things is that if you run something constantly like a light it will cost about £1 per watt per year, so changing those out can save something like £40 per year per light and would save about 188Kg of CO2 per light bulb per year (assuming they are running 24/7)

Calc is as follows:
watts/1000 to get KW
Times that by the number of hours (1 year = 8760)
Times that by 0.537 to get the amount of CO2 produced by national grid on average."

"You could base it on the new "three R's" Reduce, Reuse and Recycle there is loads on the net targeted at kids. When I get a mo I'll have a scoot around and see what links I can find. I´ve seen some great stuff in the past as I'm always looking for this type of thing to teach my kids."

"You could do an assembly on drinking water. I have done many presentations to students about the wastefulness of bottled water, where tap water comes from, and why/how we need to protect our water by taking care of our watersheds. You can use the nine minute educational video I posted on this site. To download a high quality version, go to www.back2tap.com and look under the Schools and Groups tab. Good visuals to bring to the assembly: a bottle 1/4 full of oil, container with 51oz of water, and 12 balloons to represent the amount of CO2 produced in the production of one bottle of water. Another impactful display would be a tower built from the number of bottles your average citizen drinks in a year (167 in USA) or all the disposable water bottles you can collect in one day from the school (250 in our middle school). Feel free to email me if you have any questions!"

"I'd suggest presenting everything in a way that shows how "going green" is as easy as doing what you think is right. Get them to ask themselves questions about everything they do, like "Is it better if I throw this bottle in the garbage or the recycling bin?" or "Should I ask my parents to drive me to my friend's house or ask them to walk me there?" etc. Teach them that just giving a thought to what they're doing is the best first step to take to be green.

I also find that kids armed with good, easy-to-remember information about this stuff are really influential on their parents- if they can tell their parents after your presentation to go green (start composting, get a reusable water bottle, etc.) and why they have to, then you've done your job!"

"At risk of plagiarism - the london wildlife trust ran (are running?) a campaign on green gardening;
The seven pledges
1 Plant drought resistant plants
2 Plant a mixed hedgerow
3 Plant a broad leaved tree
4 Make a pond
5 Use mulch
6 Add a green roof to your shed
7 Wild up your decking

some are more obvious than others... drought resistant plants and mulch save water... some, like ponds and hedgerows, are geared toward wildlife. (understandably, given their remit!)

admittedly it's a bit of an urban one
