"All non-profits ARE NOT created equal! I've seen the inner workings of some that are nationally recognized and I know that sometimes your donations are going to things you wouldn't support (like the CEO's personal expense account...for luxury items). That's why I ONLY support those non-profits that I know for a fact are managed responsibly. Let's talk about those! Whether we donate money or time -- it should go to the cause. I just wrote a blog about The Wildcat Sanctuary and why it's a good organization to support (www.wildcatsanctuary.org). What about you? Any great non-profits out there that deserve our attention?"

"I thought non profit organisations were like charities ina way and as a result ethical practice should prevail. I just cant believe that non profits can be a title, call me naive then. How do you find out exactly what non profits are worth backing?"

"I have to agree with Cecilia that it hard to tell which non- profits are the ones to support. is there some kind of formula to use when checking them out so you can tell the bad ones from the good ones? I mean not all of them are forthcoming with their financials so its hard to know how much of your money actually goes to the charity and not to line the pockets of the people running the organization.
So, Pamela, I hope you will continue to talk about these non-profits and how to spot the right ones from those that are basically stealing the money from the purpose it was meant for. Educate us if you can, I am sure that there are many out thee who are interested in what you have to say about this subject and if not then they are just wasting their time probably putting their money in the wrong places.
I appreciate the time and honesty you took to put this subject out there and I really do hope that you will continue to educate us and tell us more about this subject."

"Thanks, Candeeb, for your support! And I agree with Mark, let's learn from each other. My best advice is to get involved by attending an event and see what you think of the people. Or talk to friends who are involved so you have first-hand information. If it's not local, look at the information they publish. High ideals should be combined with hard facts about real outcomes. And if they won't disclose their financials, I'd say that's a red flag. If they want your time and money you deserve to know how they use it.
And, when you have a good organization that you support, tell others about it!"

"I just found out about an organization called Charities Review Council that you might want to check out. Although the website is focused on Minnesota non-profits, there's general information that would help anyone think about how to evaluate a non-profit before donating to it. The website is www.smartgivers.org"
