Why eat the seasons?

Why eat the seasons?

Seasonality of food refers to the times of year when a given type food is at its peak, either in terms of harvest or its flavour. This is usually the time when the item is the cheapest and the freshest on the market. The food's peak time in terms of harvest usually coincides with when its flavour is at its best.

There are a number of good reasons to eat more local, seasonal food:

-to reduce the energy (and associated CO2 emissions) needed to grow and transport the food we eat

-to avoid paying a premium for food that is scarcer or has travelled a long way

-to support the local economy

-to reconnect with nature's cycles and the passing of time

-because seasonal food is fresher and more nutritious

-It’s a good way to vary your diet: in the UK, our climate enables us to grow different things at different times of the year. That’s a good thing – it means you will be getting different vitamins every month of the year.

-it´s what our ancestors did and there is no proof that our diet today is any better than theirs.
