In Season Food

In Season Food

What are in season food?

Seasonality of food refers to the times of year when a given type food is at its peak, either in terms of harvest or its flavour. This is usually the time when the item is the cheapest and the freshest on the market. The food's peak time in terms of harvest usually coincides with when its flavour is at its best. There are some exceptions; an example being sweet potatoes which are best eaten quite a while after harvest.

Why eat in season food?

There are a number of good reasons to eat more local, seasonal food:

-to reduce the energy (and associated CO2 emissions) needed to grow and transport the food we eat

-to avoid paying a premium for food that is scarcer or has travelled a long way

-to support the local economy

-to reconnect with nature's cycles and the passing of time

but, most importantly, because

-seasonal food is fresher and so tends to be tastier and more nutritious
