Has the colition government given up on climate change?

Well, it wouldnt be a big surprise if the coalition government had given up on climate change measures. After all, they have bigger fish to fry: with the university fees, the wikileaks revolution and more, it´s not a surprise that they might have taken their foot off the gas.
The London Assembly today called for government funding to continue the good work set up by the London Development Agency (LDA) to tackle climate change.
In a motion agreed today, Assembly Members highlighted the importance of the LDA’s climate change programmes for our homes, businesses, local communities and our energy and transport networks.
However, Members expressed concern about the loss of funding for these projects and staff following the abolition of the LDA, which would compromise the Mayor’s ability to deliver on his and the Government’s targets.
The Assembly called for transitional funding from the Government so that existing initiatives could be preserved and projects transferred to the Greater London Authority (GLA) could meet targets.
Members also urged the Mayor to make it clear in his budget that tackling climate change is a top priority. The Mayor should also set out his revised approach to meeting the challenging targets once negotiations with the Government are finalised.
Darren Johnson AM, who proposed the motion, said:
“The LDA’s work on climate change is valuable and has cross party support. We were expecting the funding for these projects to transfer to the GLA, but it is deeply worrying that we now face the prospect of losing all funding.
“If the Mayor has any chance at all of meeting targets on climate change, it is vital that this work must carry on. We also call on the Mayor – no matter what the outcome of negotiations with the government – to make climate change a priority in his budget.
“We hope the Mayor and government will hear our voice on this issue”.
Mike Tuffrey AM, who seconded the motion, said:
“Today’s very timely motion is part of a cross party lobbying effort to ensure the GLA gets the necessary resources to take on the LDA’s responsibilities. Everyone agrees on the importance of environmental action and we hope our motion will help ensure these very important projects can continue.”
The full text of the motion reads as follows:
“This Assembly notes the GLA group’s considerable leadership and progress in mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change, both in terms of setting strategic aspirations and pushing forward successful projects that will help deliver them for our homes, businesses and local communities, and our energy and transport networks. It also notes the serious implications of the loss of funding for the London Development Agency’s projects and staff, which could detrimentally affect the Mayor’s ability to deliver on his targets and those of the Government.
“This Assembly calls on the Mayor to make clear in his budget that his stated commitment to tackling climate change remains one of his top priorities, and to set out his revised approach to meeting his challenging targets when negotiations with Government are finalised.
“The Assembly also calls on the Government to provide the Mayor with all transitional funding associated with the abolition of the LDA so that capacity for existing initiatives are preserved, and projects transferred to the GLA to meet the Mayor’s targets.”
