Can sustainable tourism protect the rainforest?

Can sustainable tourism protect the rainforest?

In light of the ongoing global debate about sustainable tourism, climate change, the protection of the rainforests and bio-diversity, Emerald Group Publishing is proud to publish a special issue of Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes with an exclusive focus on sustainable tourism in the Amazon.

Entitled “Does sustainable tourism offer solutions for the protection of the rainforest?” this timely discussion investigates the prospects, successes and challenges that confront tourism in the Amazon as a solution for the protection of the rainforest.

The special issue was born out of activities organized by the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in observance of Destination Amazonia Year 2009.  Guest editors Donald Sinclair, Coordinator for Tourism at ACTO in Brasilia, Brazil, and Chandi Jayawardena, Associate Dean at George Brown College, Toronto, Canada, explain: “This special issue focuses upon the strategies being employed by the seven Member Countries of ACTO to pursue the development of sustainable tourism in their Amazon regions. It draws together viewpoints, concepts and recommendations from the seven case studies and offers practical and powerful suggestions that should help shape the future direction of the tourism sector within the Amazon, an amazingly unique tourist destination in the world”.

For exclusive free online access to this issue (valid from 3 June to 17 June, 2010), visit bit.ly/9VeJxD and enter:
