Design Manifesto
Mankind has struggled with nature since we made our first digging tools. We marvel at our art and technology with the same zeal in which we love food. The task of the landscape designer is to reintroduce the humans to the art of nature. To blend the random beauty of the natural world with the elegant creations of our new technology, not to simply adorn the building with a familiar wrapper. Frank Loyd Wright made us realize that the structure needs to be an extension of the land, an additional feature. Let the landscape be a tool
to pull the building into the land. It should be an extension of the living/working space through the door and into the world. The doorway is dead. The land comes in and we live outside.
Let us not treat plants like bricks and shingles. Use the building materials to do what they do best, build walls and ceilings. Let nature do what she does best, change, grow, create and destroy. Jens Jenson showed us the way. It is time we followed his example.

"What an inspiring article Wells. I think the world is moving into that direction but I think most of the time, people dont know where to start, where to go and I guess that's where you and your feellow landscaper come into this. Keep informing us, we are here to learn from one another."

"Surely there should be a tribe for the "engineered environment" covering such things as landscape design, the build environment and planning. I'm a big fan of both "natural" and "engineered" landscapes, provided they are done well. Like all art forms and skills, one needs to excel in order to be considered to be of significant worth. Being original sometimes helps, being practical sometimes helps, sometimes even being common/average/similar works. Its about what works, how it works, then and only then how to do it. Even some of the most photogenic "natural" landscapes are in fact "engineered", but tend to do it subtly often using nature to dress the scene."

"I agree with both Hess and Xyfna about your article being inspirig and the need for a tribe to share all of this amazing information. I think this is a very hot topic that a lot of people could learn so many things from. Being able to and willing to make your property not only look amazing but also be sustainable should be on everyone's mind. I am a huge Frank Lloyd Wright fan and its too bad his visions were shortlived. I am very interested in learning more about your visions and design's and how they can be implemeted. Thanks for sharing what you are doing to help the planet become more sustainable."

"Frank Lloyd Wright work & visions were not short lived. Many of his designs and visions still around or have been realised, he has inspired many designers, engineers, etc. His influence can be seen in many works being created even now. Its a shame that his work has not been much more heavily and wholey embraced. The work of FLW, and his contempararies, are an inspiration to all."
